TRIBUTE TO OUR LATE FORMER NUGS PRESIDENT HAYFORD PATTERSON AKROFI. 24/06/2014

FORMER PRESIDENT HAYFORD PATTERSON AKROFI
Ghana and the Student front consider ourselves blessed because from 1974 to 1976 we had our dearest uncle Akrofi leading the struggle to better the lots of Ghanaian Students, Ghanaians, and Africa as a whole. Today, we mourn the unfortunate demise of such an industrious son of mother Ghana under such ill-fated circumstances. Your leadership provided the student front with a vision and a sense of direction, you did not only stand against government to get the best for students but you stood your grounds against countries, kings, and rulers of the age to provide the best of leadership for Ghanaian Students.

As an architect, you understood the architecture of the human society and crafted policies that we the students of Ghana can never forget. Some of which have been discussed below;

FIGHT AGAINST IMPERIALISM

On 13th April, 1975 You Led The Students Of Ghana In A Press Conference To Prevent The Visit Of The Then US Secretary Of State Henry Kissinger Who Was Tagged as An ‘’OPPOSITION TO FORCES OF PROGRESS’’ IN SOUTHERN AFRICA. When he (Kissinger) was visiting Ghana and Africa ‘TO ASSURE THE 'GOOD BOYS' REMAIN LOYAL TO AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY IN AFRICA...’ this showed your strength to stand up even against the so-called super powers of the west to stand against imperialist powers. In your own words, you called this act ‘A NATIONAL DISGRACE FOR GHANA TO BE INCLUDED ON LIST OF SUCH NATURE’ we believe that many people of our time will not be strong and willing to do this but you did as a proud son of Ghana and Africa.

PROTECTION OF GHANAIAN STUDENTS

Again in March 17, 1976 you used force and tact to put it straight to the United State Information Service (USIS) to seek prior approval from NUGS for any programs directed toward students in Ghana. To read your words that say that ‘we of the Students movement of Ghana reserve the right to advise ourselves of appropriate steps to take to right any wrongs done, and that we take no responsibility of any mishaps that shall befall such organisations, their property or their personnel’. Is how you give meaning to our slogan ‘Aluta continua’ even though in achieving our aim, we had to come against the Ghana Association of Writers, you did not hesitate to deplore the respected Students of Ghana at Legon to obstruct that unwarranted event.

STRUGGLE AGAINST NEO - COLONIALISM

From January 6th to 9th 1976 your able leadership organised a Student Seminar on Neo-Colonialist penetrations of African Universities and other institutions of higher learning, which resulted in wide press coverage of statements of conferees who generally voiced support For MPLA and Criticism of Numerous Western, Particularly U.S. Institutions. Great Britain, France and West Germany who were also singled out in these statements as neo-colonialist powers. You could predict the implications of neo colonialism on our continent and fought against oppressors rule with all your heart and all your might.

THE STRUGGLE FOR THE CONTINENT

your leadership saw the need to contribute to the issues that affected Angola, Nigeria, and other African brothers as well as inaugurating NUGS in West Germany and in Britain showing your ardent desire to ensure that the student front contribute immensely to the rescue of the international community against the so-called powers that be.

39 years after your exceptional leadership of our dear Union, we still remember you as a gallant and a proud son of the Union; unfortunately, you met your untimely death when the enemies of progress visited your house and Ghanaian students with an unfriendly fire that took from us a hero, a father, husband and our mentor.

You may have left us painfully, but the leadership you offered us will forever duel in our hearts. We are exceptionally honoured to have had you as our President and we bless the good Lord for the years we had with you.

Uncle Akrofi, on this painful day of your departure, we say that may the Good Lord keep you and be the shield and provider for the family you left behind. May He be their counsellor and console we who mourn and the provider to your many dependants.

Uncle Akrofi,
Damirifa due,
Nyame Nfa Wo Nsie.
