The school of social work(SSW) established in 1945 to train professional social workers and a committed member of GUPS, will witness an upgrading in its infrastructure and status thanks to the advocacy of GUPS.
GUPS in its advocacy demanded the following:
1.The Relocation of the school to a new site.
2. The accreditation of the school's Diploma programme.
3.The upgrading of the school to a tertiary status.
4. Getfund to extend a helping hand.
At the 11th graduation ceremony on 14th June,2014. The principal of the school Mr. D.Y.G Nonah and the Director of the Department of social welfare-representative of Nana Oye Lithur (minister of Gender,Children and social protection) disclosed that the ministry of Gender, children and social protection have taken steps to improve the lot of the school in the following areas.
1. A new land have been acquired at madina to start the development of a new site.
2.That Getfund has agreed to fund the development of the new site.
3.National Accreditation Board(NAB) is working on the accreditation of its diploma programme to enable the academic progression of SSW graduands.
4. A bill for the upgrading of the school to a tertiary status is currently before parliament for passage. This will pave way for the school to come under the care of ministry of education rather than ministry of Gender, Children and social protection.
The GUPS national secretariat thanks the ministry of Gender, children and social protection and the department of social welfare for heeding to our call and management and SRC of SSW for their collaboration.
The national secretariat will not rest on its oars to ensure that the other demands such as the allowances due the 2012/2013 batch is paid and the provision of a bus to mitigate their transportation challenges.
GUPS the union....GUPS the Professionals!!!
