MENTOR OUR YOUNG WOMEN ----NUGS WOMEN’S COMMISSION PLEADS

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE WOMEN’S COMMISSION OF THE NATIONAL UNION OF GHANA STUDENTS (NUGS) ON THE OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

The Women’s Commission of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) wishes to extend a warm hand of congratulations to all women on the occasion of International Women’s Day which falls today, 8 th March, 2014.

The Commission recognizes the momentous successes chalked by women in Industry and Academia. The Commission received with open arms the news that four Chief Executive positions in our banking industry were occupied by women, with fair representation as well on the management teams of most of these banking institutions.

The Commission is however of the opinion that more concerted efforts needs to be employed if we are to thrust more of our women into the crème de la crème positions. The widening opportunities for women to take center stage in Industry and Academia is very prominent now. Therefore all legitimate efforts ought to be invoked if we are going to be successful in that regard.

To help achieve this, women who find themselves at the top of their chosen professions must see the need to bridge the interpersonal gap that exists between themselves and young women who are aspiring to be more like them. We call for more interactions between these classes of people so that through this, more of our young women can be better advised, encouraged, motivated and mentored to follow and overtake in the footsteps that have been blazed. We believe occupying high positions alone should not end there; every effort needs to be pursued to continue the chain of succession by taking a strong interest in ensuring our young women also reach the apex of their professions.

The Commission also wishes to task our young women especially those found within every notch of our educational institutions to take up initiatives that would better their lot as well as improve society. We believe that what should define a woman should not be restricted to how many children you can bear, but what you can achieve with the little opportunities that you are presented with. We must learn to be humble, forge contacts with and ever hungry to learn from our mentors.

The Commission also further wishes to call upon the State to do more to protect our young ladies. We applaud the efforts by our State Institutions to protect the rights and dignities of our young ladies, but we are equally optimistic that more could be done to safeguard their interests as well as their futures.

The NUGS Women’s Commission once again applauds the successes that women dotted all over Ghana are chalking up. We salute your resolve that enabled you to rise above the stereotype, and further call upon you to help nurture, encourage, empower and mentor our young women to achieve even better heights than you have chalked.
