FUEL PRICE HIKES, NUGS INSIST ON WHAT GOVERNMENT MUST DO NOW.

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) wishes to state emphatically our stand on the current increase in the prices of fuel in our country. The Union will for the purpose of political expediency not want to dive into the intricacies of the merit or demerit of the increase since we require a round table discussion with the N.P.A. and or P.U.R.C. to ascertain the justifiability or not, of the increase.

First of all, NUGS is urgently requiring government to increase proportionately (to the price increases due to the increase in fuel prices and hence a correctly calculated inflation rate);
1.      The feeding grants it gives to Senior High Schools in Ghana to ensure a continuous provision of quality meals for our dear students
2.      The funds given to the managers of the School feeding Program, in order to ensure the quality provision of meals to the basic school pupil. Failure to increase this shall be seen as a deliberate effort by government to starve the little children, or a deliberate plan to stop the school feeding program.
3.      The subvention given to Public Universities, Teacher Training Colleges, and other levels of academia that enjoys subvention from government; this must be done in order to avoid a more than usual increase in school fees, which may cause several students to drop out and hence reduce the literacy rate in our country which already has a lot of illiterates due to dropping out of school.
4.      Finally, if government cares about our brothers and sisters in our prisons, then the amount spent on each prisoner per day must also be increase in order to serve them at least a balanced diet, which the law has not deprived them of, for our brothers and sisters there are over-suffering.

The aforementioned are necessary to ensure that the Ghanaian youth and student is well catered for. NUGS believes that our listening president and his entourage of quality personnel will see these issues as very necessary for the development of mother Ghana to the next level of our development.
Thank you.
