MESSAGE ON 2015 CAMPUS UTILITY

July 3, 2015.

NOTICE FROM NUGS TO ALL CONCERNED

The Nation Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) is pleased to inform all SRC and Local NUGS Presidents in the nation's Public Universities that it has sent them copies of government's recent letter to VCs regarding the payment of utility subsidies via their emails.

The letter is slightly different from the initial one secured from the Education Ministry on the same subject and has indeed succinctly addressed all the concerns raised by the VCs in respect of the initial letter including the purported lack of clarity about government's position.

In the letter, which was signed by Hon. Okudjeto Ablakwa, the Deputy Minister of Education in charge of tertiary, government makes it very clear that, it has not taken any decision for students in public tertiary institutions to pay utility bills and that, it has again taken due cognizance of Cabinet's directive to the utility service providers to exempt educational institutions from any forms of disconnections which is still in force.

In the light of this, all SRCs and Local NUGS Secretariats are enjoined to fiercely RESIST any attempt by their respective school authorities to surcharge their students the cost of utility in the school fees payable next academic year. We are quite happy to observe that, aside KNUST, UENR and UPSA, utility bills have been EXCLUDED from next year's fees in respect of all the other public Universities in the country.

The Union is very confident that this recent positive development brings perpetual finality to this furore which has lingered for far too long. NUGS again wishes to assure all students that it will not relent in its unwavering efforts at ensuring that their interests are safeguarded at all times.

Thank you.

Long live the Student Movement
Long live NUGS
Long live Mother Ghana.

Signed
