REQUEST BY USAG ASPIRANTS TO NATIONAL EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Many are the questions that must be answered and many are  those that will still remain rhetorical, regarding the unsuccessful congress. However, every problem, we believe, has got a solution no matter how insurmountable it may seem.
As aspirants and stakeholders for that matter, we believe that it is incumbent upon us to call for order and sanity in USAG
We are inundated with incalculable questions and uncertainties today because national officers have failed to officially communicate to us the next line of action after congress ended abruptly.

We therefore render our displeasure to the national executives on the following

1. The neglect of aspirants in the whole process that led to the uncalled-for situation at congress

2. The inability of the national officers to communicate to us the next line of action after the unsuccessful congress.

We believe that change does not roll on the wheels of inevitability but comes through continuous struggle. However, since all these were not done we call on the national executives to.

1. Communicate to us the next line of action stating clearly the date and venue for the emergency congress in less than a week.

2. Fix any internal problems and communicate to senators what they intend doing so non becomes disadvantaged.

3. Resource the electoral commission to carry out a prudent work devoid of any biases.

4. To fix issues with the vetting committee so they can proceed with their work.

5. Clearly state the security measures put in place to protect human lives at the emergency congress.

We further request that that this piece will be treated with a high sense of urgency so as to avoid further exacerbation of issues, considering the enormity of this case.
There is only one thing that remains to us, that cannot be taken away: to act with courage and dignity and to stick to the ideals that have given meaning to life.
We prefer to be part of the solution.

Aspirants for the most competed positions like IRS, President and General Secretary will therefore have to step up their campaign whiles aspirants for FC should note that a little more effort may see one sail through with ease. Aspirants for Press and Info. Secretary should have scored the highest score by now but this is not the reflective index showing clearly that delegates will have to scrutinize aspirants for the Position of Press and Information Secretary a little more, that is if my assertion is right.

It can also be concluded confidently that if the Elections were held today and assuming this poll is a fair representation of the opinions of delegates, then the following shall be the executive officers of NUGS

Manasseh’s Folder: Joy FM is not for my father!

When I got to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) that Friday morning, I didn’t think I would spend more than one hour there. I was wrong. I spent 15 hours. That day turned out to be one of the most terrible days of my four-year old journalism career.

The day was December 24, 2010. I had stayed late at GTV the previous night with a video editor who managed to finish editing my story. We left at about 1.a.m. I was there that morning to get a disk from the producer of the GTV’s Breakfast Show, Magnus George, so that I would transfer the story from the newsroom computer system, hand it to him and go home to pack my things and travel to Kete-Krachi to celebrate the Christmas with my family the following morning.

The story was about six minutes long, and from my experience as an intern and later a freelancer, GTV News would not use a story which was that long. I, however, wanted to tell a full story of the dangers of travelling to Kete-Krachi so I didn’t want to cut it. I was therefore happy when the Breakfast Show team expressed interest in the story.

The trouble, however, started when I went to the technicians to transfer the edited story onto a disk, which is only used by GTV in this country. As soon as they started, a white bearded supervisor whose name they later gave as Mr Akpalu came by and the story caught his attention.

“This is a very good story,” he said. “Whose story is that? When is it airing so that I can watch?” he asked. It was then someone pointed at my direction.

“Is he with us?” he asked.

“Manasseh is not a staff here but he has been doing stories for us,” a technician told him.

“And who permitted him to transfer the story? Did he sign?” he asked and reached for a book in which anybody who transferred a story onto the disk signed. I had signed. And it was approved by Mr Ebenezer Amparbeng, the editor on duty. Someone in that position needed to approve such transfer. He ordered them to stop and went to enquire from Mr Amparbeng. When Mr Amparbeng confirmed that, indeed, he authorized me to transfer, he didn’t come back to tell his subordinates to do it for me.

When I was tired of waiting, I followed up to his office. Luckily, I found him and Magnus George near the old TV Newsroom. He asked Magnus George whether he knew me and he said he had given me the disk to transfer the edited story for use on the Breakfast Show. “We don’t do things like that. You don’t just allow anybody at all to transfer…”

He refused to rescind his decision. The Director of TV and all the directors were absent that day because GBC hadn’t paid salaries of staff and they didn’t want harassment. There was no one I could report to. When I went back to the technicians, they said they could only take the risk when Mr Akpalu closed. This means I had to stay until about 5p.m.

I could not discard the story because it was a “good” story and it was getting too old. It was an exclusive story about the drowning of two pastors of the Church of Pentecost in an overflowing stream on the road to Kete-Krachi. I had exclusive access to the event and filmed everything. It was the riskiest story I had done because I had to get waist deep into the turbulent stream with strong currents so that I could film the rescue exercise which was taking place downstream. The strong waves of the stream had swept away the brand new Toyata Fortuner in which the two pastors were travelling.

When I returned, Peggy Ama Donkor and Edward Nyarko saw the story and thought it was good. For three days, they tried to help me convert the video into a format that could be edited by GTV’s machines. The technicians said it was not possible. We all gave up, but after some months, I managed to get them to convert it after some hard-earned cedis of my national service allowance changed hands. I had to do the story before we entered 2011 otherwise, it would certainly be a dead story, a story of the previous year.

When I got the technicians at about 5pm, they said they were busy doing the 7pm bulletin so I should wait until after the news. I waited, but before I got there after the news, the technicians had left “to eat supper.” Having stayed so late the previous night, I fell asleep while the news was on. The technicians returned a few minutes to the late news at 10 pm. I waited and they transferred it for me after the late news. Magnus George had shown me his office and asked that I push the disk under the door to his office and I did. I got home after midnight.

Later when the TV News editors saw the story, they thought it was too good to be ignored because of its length. Titi Anepe, who was the editor on duty used the story, which was titled A Journey to Kete-Krachi. The feedback was enormous.

At the 2011 Ghana Journalists Association Awards, that story was adjudged the Best TV News Report for the Year 2010. Another investigative piece I had done for GBC Radio also won the Best Human Rights Report of the Year. The strength of those two reports earned me the Most Promising Young Journalist of the Year. I had graduated from the Ghana Institute of Journalism six months earlier, and the awards boosted my career and inspired me to win the Journalist of the Year at the following GJA Awards in 2012.

I am not recounting this incident out of bitterness. Neither do I have the intention of indicting GBC where I cut my teeth in journalism. I just want to use this incident as a case to discuss the terrible attitude which is stifling the progress of very talented and hardworking people I know.

When I pass a comment about GBC which my colleagues there consider unpalatable, they are often quick to remind me that they (GBC) made me who I am and I must not forget to be humble. What they do not know is the hell I went through to have my stories aired, even though I was not going to be paid for the work I did.

For both GTV and GBC Radio, I did award-winning stories under stressful circumstances. I rented video cameras and travelled to as far as Bunkpurugu to get stories. I was never paid for any story I did for GBC Radio or GTV. These included all the award-winning stories I invested so much time, energy and resources to do. My payment was frustration, which compelled me to write a petition to the Directors of Radio and TV as well as heads of Radio and TV newsrooms complaining about the human barriers I encountered when I did stories for them. Nobody replied my petition. But I kept doing stories for them until Joy FM approached me.

The only thing that saved me was that though I learnt a lot from GBC, I didn’t learn the work ethic. One common sentence I heard was, “GBC is not for my father.” They often said it to back their claim that they would not be appreciated even if they stress themselves to do something extra. That attitude is not limited to GBC or the public institutions.

I thought this terrible attitude to work was limited to the state broadcaster until I joined the Multimedia Group Limited. Last year, for instance, I gave the cell phone number of a young man in the marketing department to the PRO of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Mustapha Salifu, who wanted to know commercial rates for announcements when the hospital was marking its 90th anniversary. The young man was not happy that I gave his number out and actually confronted me when I returned to the office that day. When I gave it out his number to a potential client the second time, he came to the newsroom and warned me. “This is my private line. If anybody wants to do business, give them the office line,” he told me.

When I expressed my dismay about his behavior, a colleague said, “Why are you worrying yourself? Is the company for your father?” I encounter similar disparaging comments and damaging work attitude on a daily basis. Indeed, Joy FM is not for my father. And the company you work for may not belong to your mother. But is that not where we earn our livelihoods?

My working life is only about four years old, but with my personal experience with workers, I can say attitude is one of the most damaging hindrances to the personal development of many professionals. It is good to have talent. And hard work is a much cherished virtue. But hard work and talent cannot get you anywhere if you have a bad attitude towards work. Attitude is key.

According to John C. Maxwell, “People may hear your words, but they feel your attitude.”

Former US President, Thomas Jefferson, teaches us that: “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.”

For former British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”

Lou Holtz, a retired American football player and coach, and active sportscaster, author, and
motivational speaker once said, “Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.”

he NBA legend, Michael Jordan, always had a positive attitude: “My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength.”

What I have learnt is that your attitude to work should not be determined by your environment, not even the kind of treatment you get. It is sometimes difficult but it is the best thing to do. The most destructive of all attitudes is the notion that you are only working for your employer and if you don’t put in extra effort, it is your employer who loses.

In his letter to the people of Colossus, Apostle Paul advised slaves not to allow how their masters treated them to determine their work attitude:

“Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance.” (Colossians 3:22-24).

For workers who draw salaries from their employers, it is almost like a command to treat that business or establishment as your own. In the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, he said something very profound:

“Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper." (Jeremiah 29:7). In whatever you do, the success or failure of your company will always affect you directly or indirectly. Even if you have the option of moving on after the collapse of your company, the image of a collapsed entity will affect you. How would you feel naturally if you were a panelist at a job interview and one of the two final shortlists was a former worker of say Data Bank and the other from GYEEDA? Which of them would you trust with a sensitive position?

It may seem justifiable to say the company you work for is not father and act accordingly because of how you are treated, but you will become the ultimate loser. I believe that if your employer is not treating you well, the best way to punish them is to work hard like a fool. In this way, someone will spot you and give you a better offer, and when you leave, that employer will now realise the irreplaceable asset they have lost.

Even if you work so hard and no one notices you and rewards you, God has a way of rewarding faithful servants. The benefits I have derived from winning the Journalist of the Year and other awards far outweigh any reward GBC could have given me.

Attitude matters. Good attitude determines the difference between winners and losers, and not only hard work and talent. Last year when I received my prize package of 32-inch
Samsung LED, I handed it to Ernest Larme, a video editor at Multi TV. He was the one who edited my award winning story. But that was not only the reason I gave him the entire prize package.

I had joined Multimedia only the previous month so when I returned with the story, I asked Joojo Cobbinah, who had been at Multi TV a bit longer to recommend a good editor to work on the story. He did not recommend Ernest. The young man he recommended always gave excuses why he could not do it and promised to do it the following day until I became fed up with him. Ernest volunteered to edit the story for me when he realised the frustration and disappointment his colleague was taking me through. When I was impressed with his hard work, I offered him money, but he rejected it. I felt so touched that when I got the package, I did not forget him.

I am on the same WhatsApp platform with the Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group Limited, Keneth Ashigbe, and anytime the paper does an exclusive or interesting story, he would send messages early in the morning encouraging everybody to buy a copy of the paper and read. But I hardly see staff of Graphic sharing their stories on social media platforms such as
Facebook. The reason why the Managing Director will be promoting the paper like a newspaper vender whiles reporters hardly promote their own stories may have something to do with attitude. Perhaps, if Graphic was their father’s business, it would have been different.

A positive work attitude is a culture that benefits the employee more than the employer and one must not allow external factors to determine their attitude. Always strive to be the best in everything you do, irrespective of your position, or influence or how you are treated. Strive for excellence despite the odds. If you want posterity to remember you, then in whatever you do, think about what Martin Luther King Jr once said:

“If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music, sweep streets like Leontyne Price sings before the Metropolitan Opera. Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say: Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well. If you can’t be a pine at the top of the hill, be a shrub in the valley. Be be the best little shrub on the side of the hill.

“Be a bush if you can’t be a tree. If you can’t be a highway, just be a trail. If you can’t be a sun, be a star. For it isn’t by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.”

ADVOCATE FOR INCREMENT AND EXPANSION IN THE STUDENT LOAN TRUST FUND

Established with a vision to provide eligible Ghanaian students equal access to tertiary education, the students loan trust fund has benefitted a number of Ghanaian students over the years.

However, numerous complains have also been raised in respect to the maximum amount one can apply for and the scope of coverage. Many private university students have and are still complaining bitterly about their inability to access this loan to fund their education.

This to a large extent defeats the purpose for which the fund was set up since private university students are equally Ghanaian Students.

We will therefore advocate for an expansion so as to serve the larger proportion of Ghanaian tertiary students.

We will also call for an increment in the amount due each student since the current amount is unable to substantially fund one's education at the tertiary level.

NASPA NEWS

My attention have been drawn to a purported claim of a suspension of National Service allowance. In brief, I will want to state that this information sent out there is incorrect. I urge colleagues to disregard such falsehood.

Yesterday, payment vouchers were signed before me at around 6:15 pm. In view of this, I have no doubt in my mind that, latest by next week, colleagues will receive July and August allowances with transportation inclusive. Good afternoon.

EKOW VINCENT,
NASPA
NATIONAL PRESIDENT.

THE UTAG AND POTAG STRIKE, MY STORY

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page...the words of Augustine of Hippo.

I will not hasten to add my voice to the ever-embracing issue of general concern involving UTAG, POTAG and the government of which students bear the direct effect. Out of this some have come out to brand USAG and NUGS as ill-functional because of their inability to be heard especially at the time when needed most.

I believe in innovation and that the way you get innovation is you fund research and you learn the basic facts.  -Bill Gates.
Research is good and needs to be encouraged and sustained. I believe all who work deserve their reward. However, the fact remains that some people refuse to work, yet yearn for a reward. It was very unfortunate seeing myriad of undeserving people whose names managed to be part of the Book and Research allowance payroll. We are the cause of our own doom, we leave in a country where mediocrity is mostly rewarded over hard work. People go to work to sit and watch television and yet are paid at the end of the month, these and many more are the challenges we face as a country when it comes to productivity and rewards.
If it must be done, then it must be done well. A well strategize and consolidated research fund needs to be instigated. From this, lecturers and teachers who take it upon themselves to undertake research activities could solicit from the pool if found worthy.

We can not close our eyes on what stares our face boldly. Many could attest as to whether all lecturers do undertake research activities. Yet they all crave for the allowance including some undeserving ghost ones. Yesterday we heard POTAG has agreed to call off their over 3 months protracted strike after meeting the stakeholders, that is certainly a good news and I wish that it doesn't become a nine day wonder and further wish UTAG will do same.

I further recommend the government come to an amicable compromise with both parties as far as consensus remains the ultimate yardstick in order to find a lasting solution to these labour agitations in order not to continuously make the students of this country sacrificial lamps. In all, the plight of students must not be taken for granted. I must be quick to add that some faithful lectures deserve this allowance, for some too, nature will tell!

Society suffers not because of the actions and doings of the wicked, but the silence of the wise.

It's OUR Call to Duty, the Time is NOW or NEVER!

Campaign To Arrest Methodist University College SRC President.

I call on all right thinking students of Ghana to join me in this cause to insist that the SRC president of the above mentioned institution to be arrested and investigated for putting the safety and security of students of USAG in jeopardy. It's unfortunate for this student leader has the "balls"  calling non students to attack students with machetes on congress grounds. He disrespected the second highest decision making body of the USAG by disrupting Senate and unleashing unprovoked attacks on innocent students. I call for the membership of his institution to be nullified due to the contemptuous conduct of the president.

He disrespected Senate, USAG and the entire students of this nation. I consider his conduct as a criminal and as such call on the interim executives to take legal action against him to assure our safety at subsequent USAG programs. I reiterate my call for all students to join this cause in bringing dignity back to student politics.

LONG LIVE USAG
LONG LIVE THE GHANAIAN STUDENT
LONG LIVE GHANA.

Yours in Service
Signed
Justice Edward Baah
(Local NUGS President UDS Nyankpala Campus.)

"The beauty of students politics is lost due to the absence of INTEGRITY "

Curiosity Bank has read a ridiculous piece purporting to be from the SRC President of KNUST Mr. Duke Aaron Sasu. Since there hasn't been any disclaimer from him or his office, as a friend, a coursemate and a student from KNUST I am tempted to draw my fellow students and HIS attention on issue of constitutionality which Duke in his wisdom thinks is wrong for NEC of USAG to impeach the current executives.

Now let us look into the merits of his release....
The following articles in the USAG constitution provides the CODE of CONDUCT for NEO, NEC, Senate, Committees et al

58 (1) All officers and persons carrying on duties approved by this constitution or any of the organs of USAG shall not put himself in a position where his personal interests conflicts or is likely to conflict with the performance of the functions of his office. (2) Before entering into the duties of his office, a person appointed or elected to an office shall take and subscribe the oath of secrecy and any other oath appropriate to his office.

"(3) A person appointed or elected to an office shall conduct his affairs in a manner that does not bring disrepute to this office or the University Students’ Association of Ghana."
(4) The private affairs of an officer of USAG in so far as it does not affect his competence, credibility or the performance of his functions shall not be considered against him in any deliberations
(5) A person appointed or elected to an office shall be honest in his dealings, maintain a high sense of integrity and showcase a great amount of competence.

I think my SRC president should juxtapose what transpired at the 13th USAG congress and see if it is not meritoruos to impeach the executives?

Further he made mention of the procedure followed in the impeachment .....
Any one who voilates any of the provisions qualifies to be impeached or removed from Office

Article 64.
(2) For the purposes of impeachment Senate shall be validly constitute by not less than two thirds of Senate members.
(3) Senate shall hear the facts of the allegations given due recognition to the rules of natural justice. (4) An officer ceases to hold office upon the approval of two thirds majority of Senators present and voting at the sitting.
(5) NEC shall appoint an individual to act in such a capacity until a substantive officer is elected by Senate.

Well clauses 2,3,5 are of prime interest to me.
The cast out excutives were given ample time by senate to respond to their demands ofwhich USAG IIRS decided to honor. After hearing him out SENATE didnot appreciate what he said.
The president herself came and messed issues up.
Out of 20 Institutions present at the congress 17 SRC presidents or their representatives signed to the impeachment letter ofwhich KNUST was part.
I don't know what was chasing my SRC president to hastly accept the IEC membership and swear to the oath of this constitution.
After waking from his slumber he turns round to tell stories about democracy and constitutionality.
I am wondering the constitution he was reading.
If he was refering to the USAG constitution then he must go and 'RESIT' the constitution and come again.

HE WHO SEEKS EQUITY MUST COME WITH CLEAN HANDS.

ACTING EXECUTIVE OF USAG

The Member Institutions of the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG) wish to bring to the notice of the general public that from this day Saturday 23rd  August, 2014, at 3:11pm the under listed are the Acting National Officers of USAG

·         Mr. Rahaman Kadri (0243962647), SRC President, UEWAg. President.
·         Mr. Duke Aaron Sasu (05036930), SRC President, KNUSTAg. Secretary
·         Mr. Paul Gyan (0548270430), SRC President, UDSAg. Coordinating Secretary.
·         Mad. Gloria Esinam Darko (0277658905), SRC President, UENR - Ag. Treasurer.
·         Mr. Oteng Amponsah Enock (0246122392), SRC President, UMaT – Ag. Information and International Relations Secretary.

This decision has been painfully reached as a result of the inability of the former executive of the Association to protect and organise a successful congress to account for their tenure of office and provide a means to elect new executives to lead the Association.
In the spirit of protecting the integrity of student leadership and the confidence Ghanaian students have imposed in student leaders, we will not want to wash the dirty details of the actions of the former executive but will want to say that member institutions have no confidence in the former administration hence the new leadership who have been duly sworn into office by the Judicial Board of the Association will manage the affairs of the Association until substantive leaders are elected.
We thank all students for your cooperation and understanding for not taking the laws into your own hands to cause chaos. We are also very sorry to those who got injured as a result of the unfortunate events that happened at the 13th Annual Residential Delegates Congress. You have indeed demonstrated that you are the intellectual backbone of this country. We continually pray with all senators, delegates and aspirants to cooperate with us whiles we do consultations to ensure that necessary electoral process is put in place to move our dear association forward.
We wish to also assure all students that, the newly appointed Acting National Officers will hold our former National Officers accountable and provide reasonable explanations and apologies where necessary. We therefore urge the entire student populace and the general public to forward all correspondence pertaining to USAG to the above named Acting National Officers until new executives are elected soon.
Thank you.

(Signed)
