DERRICK SPEAKS

"The greatest want of the world is the want of men? men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall."

Education, p. 57, c 1903, 1952, The Ellen G. White Publications; Pacific Press Publishing Association.

These timeless words uttered over a century ago still hold true today. If they strike a chord in our hearts today it is because as students who are supposed to be the intellectual vanguard of Ghanaian society, we have failed to on the simple matter of being honest. Deceit and deviousness and diabolism has been the order of the day. We have set to naught the ideal of 'fearless honesty'' of our founding fathers which we all sung growing up as Ghanaian students. Our student front is filled with lovers of self over service, covetous rather than conscientious.

Financial impropriety and imprudence ranks top on the list the 'sins' on our student front. Most incoming SRCs are tottering on the brink of bankruptcy as a result of this practice which can be described as nothing short of evil.

The time to act on this cancer is now! We cannot adopt a 'Fa ma Nyame', Ke' ha Nyumo', 'Let go and give it to God' attitude anymore! must strike a deathblow to this menace wherever we find it!

Let us all keep in our foremost minds the admonition of Irish Statesman Edmund Burke: "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing".
