PRESS RELEASE BY LOCAL NUGS PRESIDENTS ON NUGS AND GNUPS DEMONSTRATION DATE: JULY 24, 2014.

PRESS RELEASE BY LOCAL NUGS PRESIDENTS ON NUGS AND GNUPS DEMONSTRATION
DATE: JULY 24, 2014.
                                                 ***********************************

On the 1st of July 2014, the second highest decision making body of all students in Ghana, the Central Committee (CC) of NUGS passed a resolution to embark on a demonstration to press home students needs in the educational sector in accordance with NUGS Constitution Chapter 3 section 25(a) "cc shall be the highest legislative and decision making body of NUGS" and Chapter 3 section 25(e)(i) "unless otherwise slated all decisions of cc shall be by simple majority of members present".
The demonstration is now slated to come off on 29th July, 2014. Meanwhile some Bloc heads of NUGS have made it clear to the general public that they are not in support of the demonstration to fight for students interest.

We the Local NUGS Presidents of various member institutions who form part of CC members strongly believe those bloc heads are failing to execute their basic duty  as to fight for the interest of students who pay dues to them every year.

The NUGS constitution explicitly states in Chapter 3 Section 22(a) the composition of CC. It states;
"CC shall comprise the following;

i. National officers and Bloc Representatives
ii. NUGS Representatives on International Bodies.
 iii. SRC Presidents
 iv. SRC Secretaries
 v. Local NUGS Presidents
vi. Local NUGS Secretaries
 vii. Chairperson of the Local Women's Commission
 viii. President and Secretary of member Blocs."

We therefore believe that these bloc heads have no locus to oppose the decision to demonstrate since CC was duly constituted and represented.

Moreover, a quorum for the event was formed constitutionally by CC in accordance with Chapter 3 Section 23 which validates the decision taken.

We consider their actions as a betrayal and a gross disrespect to the interest of the ordinary student.  By so doing we believe they don't worth any contribution from the wearying Ghanaian student being it dues or capitation for congress.

This is also to remind the bloc heads that CC is the second highest decision making body of the mother Union NUGS, and our decision should be highly respected. Through this release we en-treat ALL NUGS Bloc heads to throw their support for NUGS demonstration or else we cease coming for Bloc congresses.

Beneath are some of the concern by the Central Committee for the demo:

1. POTAG Strike for two months
2.The ailing state of GetFund
3. The dying school feeding programme
4.The Imminent closure of SHS's due to government failure to pay subsides
5. Lack of basic teaching and learning materials at the Basic school level
6. Nine months allowances owed our brothers and sisters on government scholarship abroad.
7. The school fees hikes on every Tertiary institutions
8. Removal of Teacher and Nursing Trainees allowances
9. The Immediate inauguration of youth Related Boards like the GETfund, NYA, and SLTF Board
10.The then Imminent (now happening) UTAG Strike
11. ETC

  1. i always ask myself if NUGS is against the Removal of Teacher and Nursing Trainees allowance, mean while they are assured of jobs after completion..how much more we in the polytechnics and universities are we also to take allowances?,,,,,mean while we are not assured jobs...NUGS tell the Teacher and Nursing Trainees that they should go in for loans as we are also doing...WE ARE ALL TERTIARY STUDENTS....the discrimination have to stop.....
