GOVERNMENT MUST LISTEN TO TTAG AT LEAST! by BOYE NII-LANTEY WILLIAMS

A nationwide strike not to attend lectures by the members of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) begun yesterday. It’s very unfortunate that, issues have gotten to this point where students who are being trained as teachers of this great nation will decide to go on strike rather than to be in class to learn. We should not have come this far.

The strike was followed by series of Press Conferences and Press releases by the leadership of the Association. The issues raised by the Association and its members are:

1.       The Scrapping off of their Teacher Trainee Allowances by the Government through The Ministry of Education and replacing it with the Student Loans Trust Fund (SLTF), Feeding grants and to increase the intake of Students within the various Colleges of education across the country.

2.       The second issue also has to do with the Association requesting to know the fate of all level 200 students who must be posted to begin their teachings practices before they finish their various programmes of study.

The aforementioned issues have raised many concerns across the length and breadth of Ghana. It has been debated upon by many across academia and others. This has made it one of the top issues in Ghana today. Education is a pillar and must not be toiled with as it is being seen now. All our efforts and many others must be pushed into that sector so as to help develop the human capacity of this country.

On this note, I humbly want to submit that:

1.       Government through the Ministry of Education and its other agencies must settle the issues of Allowances once and for all for peace to prevail on the various campuses of the Colleges of Education. They must involve all the stakeholders in resolving this matter immediately.

2.       Government through the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service must also look at the issues of posting all Trainees who are due to be posted. This will go a long way to prevent any future challenges which I am confident that TTAG have envisaged now; and ensure that Trainee Teachers who are needed most especially in remote areas get to their stations on time. So that   pupils and students could have trained teachers at all times.

In conclusion, I would urge the Government and its agencies such as the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service (GES) and National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) to help in addressing the issues immediately for peace to prevail.

The various Principals of the Colleges of Education must also be directly involve in finding a permanent solutions to the allowances as well as the postings of the  students who are about to finish their studies.

The leadership and the entire membership of the Association must also press hard to meet their demands using every legitimate means available to them. This, I am confident that in the end all the parties will be satisfied for academic work to begin.

On this note, I sympathize with my colleagues in all the Colleges of Education across the country. We shall go through to the end and we shall all prevail.

Aluta Continua…!!! Victoria Ascerta…!!!

BOYE SALUTES GHANAIAN STUDENTS ON NATIONAL STUDENTS DAY

"Education, a right; not a privilege". This mantra has served as a guiding spirit for the essence of education, not in Ghana alone as a country alone but the world at large. It is no surprise, therefore, that this same mantra has been the motto of the International Union of Students (IUS). The same mantra remain the motto of most student unions across Africa.

A solid case can be made as the reason why it forms the summary of the 'soul' of educational provisions in the constitution of Ghana. The same reason all political parties have it as their central theme for education.

The fight for better conditions for students of Ghana started over 50 years ago. However, a well structured union was put in place to serve as the mouthpiece of all students, hence,  the formation of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

NUGS has helped solved the myriad of challenges our educational sector has been saddled with. She has had her own down moments though, but as Dr. Kwame Nkrumah once said, "We neither face East nor West, We face toward". We find strength in our weakness, solutions in our questions and progress in our quest for a better education.

Today May 15, 2015 as we mark National Students Day, I wish to join all students in Ghana to reminisce the successes chalked by former students, celebrate them and ponder over what the future holds for us. As this year marks the Golden Jubilee of NUGS, I wish to urge all students that in unity, we shall forge ahead and make giant strides in achieving great gains for all students of this nation and Ghanaian students in the diaspora.

Long Live NUGS
Long Live Students of Ghana
Long Live Ghana

CITY CAMPUS SRC MUST SET PRIORITIES RIGHT AND STOP WASTING THE DUES OF THE STUDENTS-SAYS CHARWAY JOHN NII.

It is no doubt that the current SRC of universt of Ghana-Accra City Campus is having a lot of troubles with the immediate past SRC Vice Secretary, Charway John Nii, due to the fact that he attacks the issues from an objective point of view. This led to the situation where the SRC president (Andrews Adjei) influenced the just ended SRC elections to favour the opponent of Charway (Delali Komla Kporha).

During the weekend the SRC led by the President made a visit to some few places in the Eastern Region and made some few donations which Charway calls "a waste of SRC due". He therefore calls on the SRC to rise up and set their priorities right.

Charway stated that the SRC should stop thinking they are making a fool out of the students and set their priorities right.

It is said that before you comment on the dirt in someone's house, make sure your house is clean. In an article publish by the SRC, they had an outreach program where various item including toiletries and clothes etc were donated to a children's home and calling on government to listen to the plight of the students. The question then comes,

1."Do city campus students have toiletries in their washrooms?"

2. Who are the stakeholders at the childrens home who can help fight the school fee reduction? Or is the Children's home or a chief's palace a place to make a call for a reduction in fees?

3. Can these money that the SRC is continuously wasting on these "travel and see" trips be used to help brilliant but needy students on our campus?

"We are in examination week. Look at the way students paying SRC dues are struggling and competing for plastic chairs on campus. The SRC always complains of inadequate funds yet they get some to explore the country on the "so-called" trips." Charway explained.

Charway therefore called on all students to rise up and show concern and demand for what is due them.

He concluded by saying that, the current SRC should not think because they have succeeded in implementing their plan on getting him out of their way(becomir SRC President), he has stopped being objective in demanding for what is right for the students. He assured them that posterity awaits everyone and we will meet again in the near future.

God Bless the Good Students of City Campus.
God bless University of Ghana.
God bless the youth of Ghana.

The National NUGS Secretary, Hon. Iddi Muhayu-deen was then called upon by the president to introduce the standing orders and interventional signs for the conduct of the meeting in pursuance to Article   of the NUGS constitution.

Her Evelyn Mutinta who is the local NUGS president of the host institution, KNUST gave the welcome address which is in tandem with conventions. She used the opportunity to on behalf of her outfit as well as the SRC Secretariat of KNUST thank the National Executives of NUGS for granting her institution the right to host the first CC for the 2014/15 NUGS year. She also did not mince words in touting the credentials of the university as far as its contribution to NUGS is concerned. Finally, she welcome all delegates and observers to KNUST for the CC meeting and wish them a successful a successful deliberation.

 3.0 SECRETARIAT REPORT

As provided for in the NUGS constitution, the chairperson for the occasion His Excellency the NUGS President invited the Coordinating Secretary of the union, Mr. Paul Worlanyo to deliver the Secretarial Report which he did with tact and excellence to the admiration of all and sundry. The Report as presented by the CS captured wide range of areas of concern to the secretariat in the period under review which included matters arising from the 2015 NUGS handing which came off on October 19, 2014 at the Accra International Conference Centre and was graced by Hon. Okudjeto Ablakwa, the deputy Education Minister (tertiary division) as well as the CEO of the Student Loan Trust Fund, Mrs. Shilla Boamah among other dignitaries.  The CS furnished CC members with records of some official engagements the union leaders have had with some recognized stakeholder institutions including the GES, Student Loan Trust Fund, Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, GETfund, the trade union congress etc regarding matters of concern to the student front.

He also acknowledged receipt of the union’s pick-up from the previous administration as well as keys to the five-room office building; which is the National Secretariat of the union located at the Accra City Campus of UG. The CS nonetheless bemoaned the ‘sorry state’ of both the pickup and the offices which needed a major maintenance and significant refurbishment in the case of the former and latter respectively. He also lamented about the precarious financial state of the union largely due to the failure of member institutions to honour their financial obligations to the union; a development that has compelled the national officers to pre-finance almost every project the union embarks upon. He added that only one institution had honoured its financial commitment at the time.

Under programmes and projects, the CS told the house that National Secretariat successfully organized a health screening for all officers and executives from the various blocs under NUGS which came off at UG-ACC as part of their maiden official engagement. He added that the National officers of the union had honoured countless invitations to programmes by recognized groups in society as well as member institutions. Mr. Paul Worlanyo concluded by touching on some of the press statements/releases issued by the union as well as the various courtesy calls embarked upon by the Secretariat.

3.1 DELIBERATIONS ON THE SECRETARIAL REPORT

A concern was raised about the state of the ‘NUGS Souvenirs’ by one Franklin Alale who did not understand why member institutions had still not received their souvenirs from the secretariat even though they had made the necessary financial commitments. He was however informed by the Chair that his concern would be addressed under OTHER MATTERS as provided for in the agenda where the executives were scheduled to update members in respect of that matter.
In his contribution to the deliberations on the secretarial report, the SRC President of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), His Excellency Chris did not mince words in criticising ‘defaulting member institutions’ in respect of the payment of NUGS dues and other financial obligations to the union. He wondered how people expect the secretarial to function properly as expected if member institutions are not honouring their financial commitments especially in the area of dues payment. Chris concluded by charging on all SRCs and Local NUGS secretariat to take this matter seriously and accordingly do the right thing in the interest of the union

After a number of deliberations, Hon. Wina who is the PRO of the University of Education, Winneba campus moved for the acceptance of the secretariat report which was seconded by Hon. Alale

 4.0 INSTITUTIONAL REPORTS

The Coordinating Secretary, Mr. Paul Worlanyo assisted in this exercise with the leave of the chairperson. He called on all member institutions through their reps (local NUGS or SRC presidents) to present their institutional report. A lot of them took turn to furnish the house with some of the programmes being undertaken by their respective secretariat and well as successes and challenges they’ve chalked. Reports were taken from the following member institutions including; University of Ghana main campus, KNUST, Ghana Baptist university, Christian University, University of Education Winneba, Ghana Institute of Languages, University of Ghana Accra City Campus, University of Education Kumasi Campus, UMAT, University for Development Service Wa Campus, University of Ghana Distance Education, UCOMS Kumasi, University of Cape Coast, UPSA, University of Education Ajumako campus and JAYEE University College.

During his turn, the GUPS president made a strong case for special attention to be paid to the School of Surveying and Mapping due to their peculiar challenges especially in the area of infrastructure deficit.

Hon Akwasi Agyemang who is the representative of Regional SRCs at NEC pleaded with the house to as a matter of priority; consider the establishment of regional SRCs in the regions that have none in view of the benefits associated with such.  After rigorous deliberations, Joshua Dogbey (SRC President-UG) moved a motion which was seconded by Hon. Evans for the establishment of a committee to oversee the formation of regional NUGS blocs which would ultimately pave way for the establishment of the various regional SRCs. The following people were duly nominated and accordingly sworn-in as the members of the committee. Hon. Akwasi Boakye, Tamakloe Heartwill, Andrews Adjie, Oprah Winstill, and Kusi Lazio.

6.1 DELIBERATIONS ON THE PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES

Members were generally contend with the proposed Projects and Programmes and lauded the NUGS executives for such wonderful initiatives. Nonetheless some CC members wanted clarity and sunshine in respect of some of the proposed programmes. For instance, madam Oprah of UPSA (SRC Secretary) beseech the executives to throw more lights on the ‘NUGS Hour on TV’ project. Her Excellency, Mutinta Evelyn and Mr. John Abugre wanted the house to be properly briefed about the state of the NUGS Van and NUGS hostel project respectively. Hon. John Abugre also enquired from the executives to make available further and better particulars in respect of the NUGS hostel project.  In the course of the deliberations, the NUGS executives led by the President took turn to succinctly respond to all the questions and legitimate concerns that were raised to the acclamation of all and sundry.

When called upon to contribute to the discussions, the SRC President of UG – main campus, His Excellency Joshua Dogbey used the occasion to challenge the NUGS executives to focus a little more in ensuring proper working structures and administrative secretariat of the union for the purpose of smooth coordination of its day-to-day enterprises. To him, it was absolutely incongruous and unfathomable to learn that a union like NUGS could not boast of a working structural and administrative setup even though the union was given a number of offices by the Education Ministry in recent past but has since remained the proverbial white elephant. His legitimate concern was well noted by the NUGS executives who promised to arrest the situation and as such ensure maximum utilization of the NUGS offices after giving it a major facelift.

At this moment, His Excellency Andrew Adjei (SRC President UG City Campus) moved for the acceptance of the proposed programmes and projects of the Prosper Dzitse led administration for the 2014/15 NUGS year which was seconded by President Atibilla Asana (local NUGS President UEW-K)

The NUGS treasurer who also doubles as the chairperson of the finance committee, Madam Ruby Gyimah was at this juncture called upon by the president to present the budget statement for the 2014/15 NUGS year which contained the budgetary allocations to the various committees and boards. CC members were generally contend with the modest nature of the budget and therefore had very little to say about it. The president nonetheless used the occasion to plead with member institutions to honour their financial obligations to the union on time in order to make it function as properly as expected. His concern was shared by most of the CC members who entreated their colleagues to take a cue from the president’s observation and accordingly do what is expected. Comrade Chris (UPSA SRC President) then moved for the acceptance of the budget statement which was seconded by Madam Catherine (UEW Wocom)

 9.0 ANY OTHER BUSINESS (AOB)

The issue of congress souvenirs featured very prominently under other matter as CC members expressed the strongest of reservations and concerns regarding the failure of the secretariat to give get them the souvenirs even though they had paid for. The president took his time to explain quite succinctly the seemingly intractable difficulties associated with the retrieval of the souvenirs (especially the NUGS cloth) which had been sitting at the port due to the “shoddy nature” of the transaction that ensued between the previous administration and their client, who imported the clothes from faraway China. The president added that the previous administration had also defaulted in honouring their financial commitments to their clients (importer and agent) and concluded that the issue was so mucky and complicated. He was however quick to add that his outfit was doing their possible to get the situation resolved and accordingly cleared from the port.

The house was dumbfounded and got very fumed at this development. Members unanimously challenged the current executives to haul the previous NUGS administration before the necessary bodies so they could account for their infamous actions and inactions in the matter which were generally seen as inimical to the union.  There was also a passionate appeal from the leadership of NUGS for member institutions to pay their dues on time so they could offset the outstanding amount in lieu of this matter in order to retrieve the souvenirs as a temporary measure.

 10.0 CLOSING

🇬🇭ARISE GHANA YOUTH FOR YOUR FUTURE🇬🇭 (EDDY JUSTICE FILE PART ONE)

The future of the Ghanaian youth is been sacrificed on the alter of political and leadership mismanagement. Yes the country has lost focus in setting its priorities. The future of every country is said to be a development strategy with it's focus on the youth but same can't be said about Osagyefo's Ghana. The streets of our cities are been filled with "avoidable" graduates as it was said by a Presidential candidate in this country.

The Youth Agenda  has become a misplaced priority to a government believed to have a very youthful President and a number of supposed young ministers of state.
We have in country a government with the Ministry of Youth and Sports that has synthesised into the Black Stars Ministry, looting and sharing the kenkey seller's taxes paid to the state. At the time of writing, we have a National Youth Authority (NYA) without a board. We have a National Youth Coordinator who treats student leaders with the highest level of contempt.

In 2010, a National Youth Policy was inaugurated by H.E. John Dramani Mahama then Vice President of the Republic accompanied with all the merry making which reminds me of the Queen's first visit to the Gold Coast. At that point I sighed with relief saying to myself "At long last the battle of hopelessness has ended". My aspirations were given a better boost subsequent to the launching of the implementation strategy but ooooh it was another political gymnastic. I know some will ask " what about the Youth Enterprise Support (YES) ?". As for YES I leave it for the "JUDGEMENT DAY".

The dispirited youth looks into the future with great fear and uncertainty. The current  "Domphobia" ( the fear of power outages) has shattered the zeal of entrepreneurship among the youth, crippling existing businesses and adding to the already high unemployment rate. Industries are laying off workers. Interest rates, exchange rate and high inflation rates are killing businesses. The ordinary porter of the streets of Tamale hardly gets two meals a day and the least said about three square meals. The hardship is unbearable.

Just about three months ago the brouhaha on utility bills resurfaced after government's initial failure to implement this unfriendly student policy about a year ago which was vehemently opposed by the Sammy Bingfo lead NUGS "FORCES".

We have seriously taken note of government's drolly strategy to implement this inhuman policy.
I can't believe my ears neither do I trust my eyes looking at the turn up of events. Is this the same government who  believes in progressive free universal education?  Maybe I need a two day sleep to wake up from this dream. I will surely return.

We will continue to pay your utility tariffs-Bawumia

Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia, the 2016 vice presidential candidate for the opposition NPP has assured all tertiary students that an Akufo Addo government will continue to pay utility tariffs for Ghana tertiary students. He also reiterate his party's plans to restore the teacher trainess and nursing trainees allowance.

Dr. Bawumia said, he gets baffled when people ask where the npp will get money to implement such policy saying an npp government under a hipc and oil free economy was able to pay all these monies including several other social intervention programs like NHIS, CAPITATION GRANT, leap, masloc, free marternal care, MMT, to mention a few. Therefore with an oil and a middle income economy, no government has any right whatsoever not to honour such duties.

Dr. Bawumia also added his voice to a call made by his presidential candidate Nana Akufo Addo that the IMF bailout could have been avoided if not for the economic mismanagement of the country and monies thrown into fraudulent deals. According the man popularly referred to as ''economics prophet'', all the monies dished out to cronies and friends of president Mahama through shady deals such as SADA, SUBAH, ISOFOTON WOYOMEGATE, NSS, GYEEDA etc when put together outweighs the money Ghana will get from the bailout. He there questioned why a country will throw her own money into the gutters and latter go begging.

He therefore urged all Ghanaian students to stay resolute and rise to bring back the New Patriotic Party to government for proper management of the Ghanaian economy.

Dr. BAWUMIA was speaking at a handing over ceremony of the Tertiary Students Confederacy of the New Patriotic Party (TESCON NPP) university of education Winneba-Ajumako Campus.

NUGS SALUTES WORKERS ON THE OCCASION OF MAY DAY COMMEMORATION

May 1, 2015

As the World commemorates International Workers' Day, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) is pleased to on behalf of the students of Ghana appreciate the invaluable contributions of gallant workers in Ghana and the world at large towards the  socio-economic development of their nations.

In the specific case of Ghana, the Union is very much cognizant of the hassles and tussles they go through in their unwavering quest to serving the country amidst debilitating conditions of service which have been worsened by the seemingly unending energy crisis and other economic challenges.

This has culminated in a situation where many industries are folding up because of ballooning cost of doing business in the country and are therefore compelled by the circumstance to retrench some workers for no fault of theirs.

It is against this backdrop that NUGS wishes to use this milestone occasion to challenge our government to rise to the occasion and come out with pragmatic measures to arrest the aforementioned challenges for love of God and country. The ordinary Ghanaian worker has sacrificed and continue to sacrifice a lot for this nation against many odds and is therefore deserving of salutation and commendation from all quarters.

We wish to conclude by saying AYEKOOO to the Ghanaian workforce and we pray that the Almighty God replenishes their immeasurable efforts and sacrifices with His bountiful blessings.

Long live the Ghanaian Worker
Long live Mother Ghana

Thank you.

GHANA UNION OF PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS

PRESS RELEASE

APRIL 30,2015,
ACCRA.

GUPS OPPOSES PROPOSED UTILITY CHARGES ON STUDENTS POLICY

The attention of the Ghana Union of Professional Students has been drawn to an issue making rounds in the media circles and public domain which bothers on a proposed policy to charge students of public tertiary institutions, the full cost of their Utility Bills.

This position, according to reports and our background check was a culmination of discussions which were held between the Ministry of Education and Student Leaders on the subject of efficient use of utilities in our public universities.

We are also informed of a document making rounds on social media and other platforms which is purported to be bearing the signature of approval of this proposal by some student leaders as evidence of a concensus reached between the Ministry and student leaders at a Stakeholders meeting held at the University of Professional Studies on March 23 this year.

The Union wishes to place on record for the benefit of the general public and its entire constituents that GUPS has NOT made any input into any such proposal and by extension is not a signatory to the said document.

Again, the Union wishes to register a non-negotiable stance against any such proposal of burdening the ordinary Ghanaian student with the undeserved plight of having to pay fully for utilities while recieving education in our public tertiary institutions.

We consequently advise government against deliberating on any proposal in this direction whether at the Ministerial or Cabinet level.

We also deem it important to remind government that the implementation of such a policy will only be a contradictory position to the Constitutionally enshrined provision of working towards making education PROGRESSIVELY FREE at all levels, to which this government professes to be committed to.

We must also state without any shred of equivocation that we are ready to exhaust all non-violent mechanisms to ensure that such an injurious proposal is not considered at all.

If we however do not make any headway with these diplomatic means, we cannot assure government that we and our constituents will be able to hold ourselves from using radical methods of negotiation to drum home our stance should government initiate any moves to go ahead with the policy.

Charging the ordinary Ghanaian student the full cost of his or her utitility bill is a policy which is very much averse to our principles as a Union especially in the face of stifling economic conditions in the country and we shall oppose it with all the vehemence at our disposal.

Finally, we wish to add that GUPS as a Union recognizes that the efficient management and a sustainable utility sector must be a shared responsibilty between government, civil society and all other stakeholders.
We are therefore ready to suggest viable alternatives to tackling the problem rather than charging the ordinary Ghanaian students with the full cost of Utilities.

Long Live   Ghana!

Live the Union of Professionals!
