IINVITATION TO LAUNCH OF “DONATE A BOOK PROJECT”

Warm greetings from the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Secretariat. We duly acknowledge your support and recognize your efforts relentlessly in having an impact on all walks of life in the country.

We wish to officially invite Ghanaian students, the media (print,radio and TV), civil societies, NGO’s, etc and all and sundry to the official launch of the NUGS “DONATE A BOOK PROJECT”

DATE : Wednesday, 1st February, 2017
VENUE : Wisconsin international university college (Accra), Auditorium.
TIME : 9:00 am

BACKGROUND
Research conducted in over 60 basic schools in the country specifically Ashanti region, the three northern regions and the greater Accra region shows that an average of two thirds of students use one exercise book to serve as class exercise book and assignment (homework) book for at least two subjects and at most four subjects.

This has contributed largely to the poor standard of grades recorded at the basic level resulting from poor referencing and revision by students because their books gets spoilt over a short period of time.

The major cause of this canker is as a result of poverty, high cost of living and negligence on both parents and teachers.

Its our strongest belief that a donation of five (5) exercise books per student will complement what their parents give hence reducing the overdependence on one exercise book.

TARGET
Over one million(1,000,000 +) exercise books needed. Items like pens ,pencils,mathematical sets,etc are also needed.

Two hundred thousand (200,000) Ghanaian students in deprived areas to benefit with each student getting five (5) exercise books across the country.

NUGS WISHES ALL GHANAIAN STUDENTS A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

We bring you official  greetings from the national secretariat of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS). 

Indeed, it was an inexplicable experience when 31st December, 2014 paved way for 1st January, 2015. 

All too soon the first semester of the 2015/2016 academic year has successfully come to an end. Congratulations in advance for excelling in your exams and other facets of life.

Once again, the momentous season in the last month of the year 2015 is fast approaching and as a Mother body of all students in Republic of Ghana, NUGS appreciates the relevance of wishing all Ghanaian students home and abroad a Merry Christmas. 

This festive yuletide is for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith. 

As we all join the rest of the world to celebrate this season, may it be a moment to unlock the floodgates of overwhelming blessings, giftings, qualities and protection as 2016 awaits us. 

We are optimistic of a 2016 full of student-problem-solving projects to ensure that a pleasurable year is lived.

We admonish all our cherished constituents to be highly circumspect of their movements to curtail any casualties and unforseen contingencies. We say "Think twice ahead of Christmas, NUGS CARES".

NUGS CELEBRATES FARMERS ON THE 31ST FARMERS' DAY AND INTRODUCES STUDENTS IN AGRICULTURE POLICY

The cardinal points of every nation are its Agriculture, Health, Education, Economy, Energy, and Security. 

As we commemorate such a glorious day, the National Union of Ghana Students on behalf of all Ghanaian students home and abroad wishes all farmers -- Subsistent, Commercial -- a happy Farmers' Day. 

As all and sundry gather at Bolgatanga, the capital of Upper East Region of Ghana on the theme "Transform Ghana: Invest in Agriculture" to mark this occasion, we want to say ayekoo to our gallant men and women whose sweat and toils feed us. 

From the theme, we can deduce that increased investment in agriculture has a direct relationship with increase in foreign exchange, stability of the national currency, industrialization, job creation, infrastructural development, and the attainment of quality education. 

To contribute our quota as a union, we want to take this opportunity to announce our maiden policy "STUDENTS IN AGRICULTURE FOR BETTER EDUCATION." This aims at increasing the growth rate of Ghana's agriculture from the dying state of 0.04 and using the profit to undertake social intervention programs that hinge on education. More details would be giving during the launch.  

Dr. Kwagyire Aggrey made a remarkable statement when he said, "If you educate a man you educate an individual but when you educate a woman you educate a nation." But Tetteh Quarshie practically demonstrated that "When you cut down a tree you destroy lives but when you plant a tree you give lives." 

We salute your cutlasses and hoes for their potency!

We say kudos to your muscles and brains for your industriousness! 

We stand in ovation for your heart of determination to ensure we do not go to bed on empty stomachs! 

We say "ayekoo" to all farmers and a special one to all student farmers.

My attention has been drawn to a publication emanating from a program on Radio Universe yesterday dubbed Timeline With Nugs, which seeks to portray that I "was not present at the 2nd NEC Meeting.

I am by this statement setting the records straight that;

1. I was present at the 2nd NEC Meeting and participated fully in all decision that NEC took.

2. That I threw my overwhelming, unflinching and ever ending support to the decision taken by NEC which is in the best interest of the vast majority of Ghanaian Students.

3. That the information that some Students put out on the said radio program are FALSE, CAPRICIOUS and a CALCULATED attempt by them to suit their  parochial and the interest of his PAYMASTERS, just to draw my name into the hullabaloo and turbulence our Union is going through.

This is a dent on my  image and  indite on my CREDIBILITY as a person.
 Let me emphatically state that NEC formed a QUORUM,  and anyone who seeks to verify this position as on the face of the MINUTES of the meeting from the Nugs CS who acted as the Secretary in the meeting.

Finally I want to assure all Ghanaian Students that Nugs WILL NOT DIE but will leave up to its mandate of restoring HOPE to the silent majority of Students who continue to suffer under our educational system.

NUGS DISCLAIMS AUDIT REPORT WHICH INDICTS SOME 2014/2015 EXECUTIVES 

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) wishes to entreat Ghana students, Ghanaian students abroad, the general public, and all media houses to disregard the statement published by the immediate past secretary of the union, Iddi Muhayu-Deen which is accusing some of his colleagues of embezzling the union’s funds. 

The said accusation has since been published by various media houses and on some social media platforms without cross-checking from the union. 

However, NUGS will like to state unequivocally that the allegations therein stated have no basis and are born out of nothing but blatant malice or mischief.

As a Union, we are ashamed of the conduct of the former General Secretary who did not raise any issue before and during the emergency congress which saw the new national officers elected, during the transitional period, and after the handing over ceremony but rather, he is now moving from one media house to the other making allegations against his colleagues. 

Subsequent to that, the union has not received any official complaint of any misdeeds which we believe is because the audit report is yet to be completed and has not been made public. 

Our checks with the media house that first broke the story indicates that the DRAFT audit report which has not gone through the dictates of the Constitution of the Union and that of natural law of justice and consciences is being paraded as the basis of the unwarranted allegations which aims at tarnishing the reputation of the Union which gave the said former executive the chance to serve. 

As an executive body, we are worried at the perennial malice that follows our annual congresses and handing over ceremonies where some persons decide to use the Union as a vehicle for their personal interest and fame.

As national officers, we are bound by the constitution of the Union and our conscience to ensure that monies that are received by the Union are used judiciously and we will duly communicate any malfeasance that we detect to the general public and take all necessary steps to retrieve such. 

The three (3) ladies mentioned, Rejoice Akrashie, Iris Kwafo-Mensah and Rhodalyn Eshun are persons who have served NUGS diligently, this is the least they deserve. Besides, all records with the Financial Controller shows that there was no such embezzlement and there is no final audit report that has been accepted by the central committee of the union as at now. 

In addition, we want to state on authority that it holds no merit and as such all concerned persons should disregard it and treat it with the contempt that it deserves. 

May we also express our displeasure at the rate at which such allegations regarding officers and former officers of the Union are hastily published by some media houses without any cross-checking or verification from the current executives. 

NUGS has continuously served the interests of the students of Ghana with a pure heart, dignity and a sense of purpose. 

We remain resolute in our focus on alleviating the struggles that plaque the ordinary students: The imminent utility bill payment, the dwindling government support for the education sector, teacher trainees being sacked for no better reasons, continuous cost shifting unto the ordinary student, poor infrastructure etc.

Lastly, we request that all media houses that published the allegations about the union and its former executives do well to publish this official disclaimer as a rejoinder from the union. 

We hope fervently that this statement will clear any doubt and end all discussions on this matter.

FIGHTING THE ALBATROSS OF UTILITY BILLS ON STUDENTS

If you won't help us fight leave us to fight...... Ain't that curious

When people who had everything for free now under the pretext of capitalism advocate against lesser of those things to be enjoyed by their children and grand children.

Germany is more capitalist than Ghana but education is free because they prioritize education.

U.S.A have a comprehensive educational support system that give loans to almost 60% of new entrants to college. While there are other better scholarship schemes available. They enjoy all these beside they robust economy.

Meanwhile in Ghana some think to be responsible means pay utility bills.
How can we pay when student financial support is very minimal?

How can we pay when our parents get paltry as salary?

How can we pay when politicians give all financial aid to their children and cronies?

How can we pay when there is no direction to how the future of the youth ought to go?

We don't know capitalism better than Europe,USA and Canada and yet because education is their priority it's very flexible to enjoy.

We can't pay!
We no go pay!!
We won't pay!!!

PAYMENT OF UTILITY BILLS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF STUDENTS AND VICE-CHANCELLORS BUT THE GOVERNMENT

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) wishes to inform Ghana Students and the general public to regard the supposed meeting of Vice-Chancellors Ghana (VC Ghana) and the various Students Representative Councils (SRC) in the public tertiary institutions on payment of utility bills on Tuesday, 3rd November, 2015 at University of Professional Studies (UPSA) as “Just a gathering of SRCs” and not a decision making body of Ghana students.

NUGS believes that any decision that would be binding on Ghana Students and generations to come needs to follow the right procedure and not just a meeting between VC Ghana and SRCs which is not recognized by any law as a highest decision making body for Ghana Students. The highest decision making body according to the constitution of NUGS (the recognized Ghana Students movement by law) is congress and not a gathering of SRCs.

We bemoan the Government’s backslide in settling the debt it owes the utility providers which is the basis for VC Ghana in pushing the payment of utilities to students. We are by this sending a plea to Government to settle its debts and set students free once and for all from paying utility bills.

Lastly, we want to unambiguously state that we disagree with the idea that the Governments financial burden must be the burden of the ordinary Ghanaian students, we therefore encourage VC Ghana to invest in ways that will push the Government to pay instead of Students to pay utilities.

Education continues to be a right and not a privilege as stipulated by the 1992 constitution of Ghana.

NATIONAL STUDENTS' AWARDS (REVIEW SUMMIT )

To the Glory of God and Country and in our quest to ensure that we reward the deserving, we had a successful review summit at UPSA on this day Saturday 31st 2015 at 10:00am.

It was a general observation by participants that NSA is a good initiative and must continue to award the deserving. The event brought together students, student leaders, corporate Ghana, media, and opinion leaders together to recognise the contributions being made in the forward March of education in Ghana.

It also offered a platform for student artist to showcase their talent and most participants were thrilled with the poetry by Gombilla the poet. and commended the team for putting together such an important event.

We also discussed among other things

The General overview of NSA 2015
The Mode of nomination, Selection and event management.
Review of categories and proposed substantial modifications
Discussed the roadmap for NSA 2016 among other things.


Participants  also mentioned that there were a few operational challenges like the absence of corporate sponsors for such a huge event among other things and suggested that more efforts be made in that direction to raise funds so that winners will have a huge prices to take home in addition to their plaques and citations.

The NSA Team expressed the joy of working together for a successful NSA 2015 and expressed the readiness to ensure an eventful NSA 2016.

The Executive Director gave his concluding remarks by thanking all and sundry for the contributions and the sacrifices that made the awards a success; he also Congratulated all winners, urged them to continue to live up to the expectation as winners, and assured participants of the readiness of his outfit for a successful NSA 2016.

DISCLAIMER FROM THE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICE OF UG SRC ON THE POLICE CONDUCT AT THE NUGS EMERGENCY CONGRESS.

 The Ghana Police Force were represented at the National Union of Ghana Students' Emergency congress held at the Islamic University. 

Their core mandate was to protect students  who have come from various institutions to exercise their franchise.

The encounter between the  Police and the University of Ghana delegation was when Prosper Dzitse the Outgoing  President of NUGS was instructing the Police to allow students from the University without accreditation to vote as against the decision by the Chairman Of Steering Committee, Richmond Asare Tinkaro.

We want to state on authority that there was no situation where the Police slapped or hit the SRC President, Davies Ohene Fobi.
The falsehood circulating ,by an unknown name  must not be given any attention.  This is just an attempt to tarnish the image of H.E DAVIS OHENE FOBI.

PAY LECTURERS THEIR RESEARCH ALLOWANCE- USAG CRIES.

With a bleeding heart,  the leadership of USAG wish to use this medium to express our dismay at government's unwillingness to pay the book and research allowance of lecturers.

It may be recalled that before the commencement of the semester, our lecturers went on strike on the issue of allowance and we pleaded with them to return to the classroom for the common good of the students and begged government to pay the needed allowances on time.

But this seem to have fallen on deaf ears and as a result, lecturers are very much sent aback by this sad development.

We the leadership of USAG and all the University students of Ghana wish to state emphatically that; just as we don't want our lecturers to leave the lecture halls for another strike action, so do we not want our lecturers to go hungry or lack the logistics to better their working conditions.

On this note, we want to plead with government again, and petition your office (Mr. President) with a bowl of tears that University Education is our surest bet to understanding the complexities of handling modern economies and hence our key to building a strong nation financially and otherwise. Therefore government should do all its possible best to engage our University lecturers and settle the quagmire of allowances.

TO : THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION, 

STEERING COMMITTEE, NATIONAL OFFICERS, AND THE ENTIRE MEMBERSHIP OF NUGS

SUBJECT: THE POSITION OF NEC ON THE RECENT DEVELOPMENTS CONCERNING THE EMERGENCY CONGRESS

Please accept greetings  from the National Executive Committee (NEC) of NUGS. 

The National Executive Committee of NUGS wishes to, first and foremost apologize to all stakeholders on the recent happenings within the rank and file of the Union in the runup to the emergency congress, which is slated for Saturday October 3, 2015 at the Islamic University, Accra.

NEC gives due cognizance to the structures of the Union and acknowledges the efforts of all and sundry especially the National Executive Officers (NEO), the leadership of the Steering Committee, the Electoral Commission (EC) as well as the general student populace in ensuring that the Union moves forward in this "trying moment".  

We further wish to take responsibility for all the mishaps that befell the Union in recent times especially with the brouhaha surrounding the Electoral Commission.

Without seeking to recollect the already spilt milk, NEC has resolved and accordingly directs that the following be observed by all parties for love of God and our dear Union.

We acknowledge the recommendations made by the National Executive Officers of the Union and wish to state that it purely remains a recommendation/suggestion as explicitly stated in the said statement. Our constitution provides that nobody or organ has the authority to compel the Electoral Commission which is an independent body to effect such changes except the members of the commission. This is pursuance to Article 50 (f) of the NUGS constitution.

We further want to accentuate that, under our current constitutional regime, it is within the purview of the NEO to convey Congress and not any other body, i.e whether emergency or normal Congress (The combined effect of Article 15 and 16 vindicates this position).

We further recommend the following:

1. That, henceforth, all parties should respectfully desist from issuing Statements or Circulars on the above subjects but rather communicate their  recommendations directly to the body concerned because the open exchanges are not helping matters at all. We are thus, calling for a rather diplomatic engagement with significant finesse for love of God and Union. 

2. That, all parties should uphold the spirit and letter of the very Constitution that binds us together as a Union and provides independence to the aforementioned bodies while working hand in hand for the success of the emergency Congress.

3. We again wish to communicate to both the Electoral Commission and the Steering Committee to take the very decisions that shall be in the collective interest of the Union towards having a smooth, transparent, free and fair Elections rather than kowtowing to the whimsical and capricious predisposition of any individuals or group. Both committees enjoy some significant independence in view of their crucial roles and that, must be respected and upheld by all. 

4. In view of the foregoing, NEC suggests to the National Secretariat (NEO) to engage the services of the Electoral Commission of Ghana; which we believe shall best help prevent some basic avoidable electoral flaws and allay the fears of all stakeholders 

In conclusion, NEC wishes to reassure all and sundry of our unwavering commitment to ensuring that nothing is left to chance as far as the organization of the emergency congress is concerned. And that, NUGS shall triumph once again.

We are hopeful and confident that we could count on your usual cooperation and support for love of God and Union.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE! NUGS MUST WORK AGAIN!

After the just aborted 49th NUGS Congress, it is no longer debatable that our UNION needs a FIX to RESTORE it to those timeless values that were once its hallmark.

What is even more untenable is that the NUGS President has not even offered an unqualified apology to the students of Ghana, whose resources have just been mismanaged in a very inexplicable manner. There has been no show of remorse or regret on the part of the NUGS President for the happenings at the 49th Congress. That the students of this Country are taken for granted by the leaders of this country is not enough. Our very own too, have taken to the gallery to abuse our conscience and insult our intellect.

Clearly, this is unacceptable!

We cannot keep running the Union in this haphazard manner. If glory must be served to the Head of an organization, so too must blame be apportioned squarely.  

Let me quickly reiterate that RESTORATION is a message of HOPE, VIBRANCY and RELEVANCE.

I have often looked at our Union with a mixture of hope and fear. I have asked myself time and again is NUGS a rising or setting sun? But now I think I know - it is a rising sun that is tainted with so much apathy and indifference. If only we will rid all the apathy and indifference we will have happiness to know that NUGS can live up to its billing. NUGS Must Work Again.

And so when we say NUGS MUST WORK AGAIN, it’s not just one of those slogans, it’s a clarion call to all to come together to make NUGS more relevant and conspicuous in the scheme of things in this Country.

Time is of essence, I cannot wait to see NUGS WORK AGAIN.

VOTE BOYE AND SHARE FROM HIS CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP

Ladies and Gentlemen of NUGS, I have nothing new to tell you about Comrade Boye William, the man who has volunteered to serve his constituents and through the National Union of Ghana Students earnestly solicits your support and votes as the next President of NUGS, but to stand beside him bearing eloquent testimony that as a tested and reliable man, student activist he meant well for NUGS and posterity.

Boye has a character line that reflects unpretentious group and social concerns and lives laboring for collective good. He believes in the power of shared vision even at the family level. Good Mothers, Good Fathers and Young Delegates, I am standing as a young element to witness that this mandate is given to Boye as a sacred social contract with a man of charisma and mission to serve and transform NUGS to her pre-eminent light of the student activism status. 

 I am a witness to his pro-students and transformational manifesto as a sacred covenant and out there begging for you cherished voters’ mandate.  He is a good man; he has been a tested activist and student leader. He will do well as a proletarian president and there will be accountability, transparent and good governance, genuine union relationship, and youth and women development. 

Impede not the coming of Boye William, because he is the choice of delegates and we are only awaiting his coronation date. He’s indeed the quintessence of all campaign slogans.

REJOINDER

My attention has been drawn to a publication on Critical Thinkers WhatsApp Forum and same circulated on other WhatsApp platforms with my name and contact as the byline. 

My investigation revealed that a certain NANA BOAKYE registered to MTN number 0246970434, who is holding himself as a former TESCON PRESIDENT OF TESCON-KNUST and Head of Publicity of KUSI DANQUAH GODWIN LAZIO’S NUGS PRESIDENCY CAMPAIGN.

It is true I did a write-up titled ‘EMERGENCY CONGRESS 2015: TIME FOR NUGS TO CHOOSE A LEADER’, It is true also that the piece was tailored to project Boye William over and above his contenders. 

The effects of the article was what pushed the Head of Publicity of Lazio’s Campaign (Nana Boakye) to engaged in academic dishonesty by editing my write-up to court hatred for the obvious choice.

I am shocked at Nana Boakye and for that matter TEAM LAZIO, because as Head of Publicity of a presidential campaign, the least I expected from them was to debate policies and curriculums, they are engaged in politics of malice.

Please disregard the deliberate desire by TEAM LAZIO to maim the leadership ambition of Boye William. What they have to appreciate is the fact that Boye exemplify the leader and father NUGS need. He topple   his challengers and has since remain the pain in TEAM LAZIO’S neck.

Please disregard the claim that I wrote to ruin the popularity of Boye William. I don’t want to incur the wrath of God. ‘Touch not my anointed’ –touch not Boye because he’s sent to come and undo the do to restore NUGS, for NUGS must work again.

EMERGENCY CONGRESS 2015: TIME FOR NUGS TO CHOOSE A LEADER

Dear Reader, I ended last weekend with an insight about the vision that Boye William has for National Union of Ghana Students  if elected as the President of NUGS,  my mobile phone was bombarded with series of calls and SMS from former officials of SRC and students who have already graduated many years ago and undergraduates from various campuses studying both at Home and in the Diaspora; the feedbacks has really shown the level of importance the students attach to their umbrella body called NUGS.

Today, the man of the moment is Boye William of University of Professional Studies Accra, he's a veteran Comrade that has spent several times following the activities as well as serving the students organ, and the first time he was Accra Academy SRC President and president of Greater Accra Regional SRC.

Now I ask, what shall it benefit someone in SRC that her contemporary almost became graduates of the college, maybe he has forgotten something so special in SRC.

However, from what I am seeing, PK has already lost touch with the reality of life in NUGS, I have said it before that I am not a student of history but a custodian of history, as such, Paa Kwesi cannot be allowed to contest even if he does he will definitely loss out based on the fact that the President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) about to hand over is coming from the same tock.  As enshrined in the tradition of NUGS, this is time for the other bloc to produce the next President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

I wonder why someone that has contested for NUGS Presidency twice and lost out in two attempts still doing in the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) instead of playing advisory role, the last time I met PK in Jasikan, the capital town of Jasikan District with one of the Presidential Aspirant then from NUGS "Please, don't discussed issues of NUGS with me because, I am no more a Student, in fact, I have moved on" he said. I don't know if I am still dreaming to see the same PK contesting for NUGS Presidency.

It is on records that I was able to get a clear-cut policy and direction thrust of leadership from Boye William. But I was unable to get any from PK up to this moment, as I write. This, in my opinion, is not the best approach or way for someone that intends to lead a union of intellectual minded young people.

While I blame the former student leaders for not making the NUGS Constitution and Charter of Demands available to the young people aspiring to lead NUGS because most of them have never seen NUGS constitution and charter of demands in their life and they want to aspire. May be it is because they are not close to the POWERS that be in NUGS but some of us are fortunate enough to have a COPY.

Conclusively, I want to state without fear of intimidation or favour that Paa Kwesi should have a rethink and reconsider his position and step aside honourably in order to give the younger generation the chance to test their popularity across the Ghana. How can he the oldest of all be preaching renaissance, when he was part of the generational failure? Where the energy is the synergy? Why hasn’t he cooperated?

ONE MORE THING

As a matter of fact NUGS under the dexterity leadership of Comrade Boye William will restore the hope of the Ghanaian Students based on his "Operation Reinstate All The Politically Victimized Students and Activists in Ghana", the information available before me has clearly shown that he has started talking to the leadership of other student bodies in an attempt to bring all of them under one single umbrella apart from the empowerment scheme, indeed Boye is consolidating on his "NUGS MUST WORK AGAIN" campaign. 

Under Boye, the intellectual capacity of NUGS as an organization would be exalted, so that the various structures of the union- state joint committee and students’ unions now have requisite intellectual wherewithal to lead successful and genuine struggles to protect the interest of an ordinary students.

Ghanaian Students for that matter Delegates cannot forget in hurry the recent struggle for the reduction of Academic Facility User Fee (AFUF), the National Service online registration fee and the attempt to revise in the anti-residential policies. Despite the fact that I have my own disagreement with President Prosper, but I must give him kudos for this singular feat for opposing the UPSA Declaration; a position that has since put him against his king makers. We cannot forget the nationwide disconnecting of schools and colleges in the country. Our tertiary institutions keep increasing the cost of same sets of admission forms. The criteria for selecting applicants still remain a misery. In fact NUGS needs to really work again to restore smiles on the faces of its teaming members.

IDDI OF NUGS FAME OCCUPIES NUGS CONGRESS (2015)

Many were those who for some justifiable reasons, have expressed and continue to express surprise and bemusement about the apparent loud silence of the gentleman of NUGS fame and the failure of his captivating pen to occupy the just ended NUGS congress in view of the several outlandish occurrences recorded at the botched programme which took away its shine. Some cynics even proceeded to insinuate that Iddi has astonishingly, lost his stouthearted pen and thus, lacked the requisite bravado and testicular fortitude to occupy his own. Hahaha they really do not appreciate what it means to be an avowed occupier. This very occupation nonetheless, is not in response to them but a natural occurrence which would have happened anyway because characteristically, I take some few days to reflect on what to occupy so that my account becomes watertight and bereft of bugs. 

Now, the Occupation: ...

Like I always say, the essence of this exercise or rendition is not to affront the good name of any union or association but rather to bring to the fore, the issues as happened for the purpose of learning the necessary lessons to guide us moving forward. Arguably, NUGS did not get it right at all as far as this year's congress is concerned; owing to a number of factors. So what went wrong? Fundamentally, 4 core issues av identified which are as follows:

1) The choice of Okuapeman SHS 

2) The nauseating bedbugs saga

3) The inexplicable failure to hold CC on day two of congress as scheduled

4) The unpardonable negligence of the EC

1) THE CHOICE OF OKUAPEMAN SHS 

Even though I had earlier sought to justify the choice of Okuass as the congress venue because I didn't have any reason to doubt the LOC, I think that, with the benefit of hindsight, they certainly could have done much better is getting us a better alternative in the same region after the disappointment from the Presby college of education. The LOC again did very little by way of properly inspecting the accommodation facilities of the institution and ensuring that they were at least, up to scratch before the arrival of delegates because they (the LOC) were of the mistaking belief that the assurances from the school authorities were enough to allay all fears but this, unfortunately was not the case. The accommodation challenges were so overwhelmingly manifest much to our dismay. We all had to help clean up the place even on the arrival day which was surely, inconveniencing and somewhat, problematic. 

2) THE NAUSEATING BEDBUGS SAGA 

Admittedly, there were issues of bedbugs invading the accommodation facilities at the congress ground which really tormented some delegates even though, the issue was somewhat, exaggerated on social media but one cannot begrudge such alarmists because there cannot be any justification for delegates to be made to experience such disservice in this 21st century. Without seeking to do any inept rationalization, the issue of beg bugs is a no news in the nation's second cycle institutions because it is almost ubiquitous. Am sure we all anticipated this problem the very day we were informed that the congress would be held in a senior high school.

So what measures were put in place? I can confirm that the place was indeed fumigated four days before our arrival (day 1); perhaps the animals were just too stubborn for the chemicals. That notwithstanding, the rooms were re-fumigated twice at the expense of the union, the following day in view of the public outcry before it was somewhat, brought under control, thou not completely arrested. This obsession or preoccupation in the early hours of Thursday affected the first activity of congress (float and outreach to Akropong school for the blind) which couldn't come off. 

3) THE INEXPLICABLE FAILURE TO HOLD CC ON DAY 2 OF CONGRESS

Even as the general secretary of the union, I still do not understand why the congress CC wasn't held on the eve of Thursday as planned. Almost everyone was prepared for it but to no avail. The excuses for me were at best, inept, preposterous and irreconcilable. We wasted the entire evening doing a lot of nothing. How pathetic! At a point in time, I wish I had the constitutional powers to convene CC in the circumstance but hmmm. This rather reprehensible action gave room for all the suspicions, aspersions and innuendos that were being casted. Obviously, our failure to hold the CC as scheduled but rather Friday night (which was meant for live band jams) only brought avoidable tension to the ground and affected our activities for Friday and early hours of Saturday due to the issues that emanated from the infamous vetting results, which almost destroyed the congress. 

I salute the NUGS Judicial Board for righting the wrongs eventually and bringing back those candidates that were unduly disqualified. To me, the vetting committee was simply disappointing to say the least. I equally salute the Ghana Police Service for the ginormously fantabulous services and support we received from the men in uniform relative to the maintenance of peace and order at the ground. 

4) THE UNPARDONABLE NEGLIGENCE OF THE EC

Only when we all thought everything was over and that elections (the last congress event) could proceed in earnest (thou quite very late), we were again greeted by what I call, the anticlimax of the whole congress from the EC. How on earth could the EC wrongly give a candidate a different name and proceeds to print the ballot papers without any checks or the necessary meticulousness? Absolutely, unpardonable if u ask me. This eventually led to the abrupt dissolution of congress by the steering committee, the EC and NEC because that was the only option at the time. 

NOW, THE SHOCKING REVELATION 

I know you wouldn't believe that after the botched elections and the subsequent dissolution of congress, some of our colleagues (delegates from various institutions) decided to steal the school mattresses which were hired by the union. Over 138 mattresses were unaccounted for in the final analysis. How sad! Now if each mattress as we are being told, is costing a little over GHS 90, then u can can imagine how much financial loss we have caused to the union we claim we love because surely, the has to, by all mean, replace all the stolen mattresses. If u know u were guilty, then shame on you and don't forget that the union shall come after you sooner or later. Posterity shall surely judge all of us. 

WERE THERE SOME POSITIVES? 

As they say, every coin has a silver lining, so is it the case that a number of positives were recorded at the congress aside the fascinating social engineering we all witnessed; where people made great friends across the gender divide, the opening ceremony was very successful, the CC was excellent until the declaration of the unpopular vetting results which threw the whole house into haywire and unimaginable kerfuffle. There were generally no issues with both the quality and quantity of food served except for the occasional delays, the trip to Boti falls was also great and nostalgic. Same can also be said about the games and the press conference among other positive milestones achieved. As we promised you, there were also no issues of NPP and NDC student caucus trying to outdo each other; perhaps due to the subtle emergence of a 3rd caucus, which is generally seen as a breakaway of one of the two traditional caucuses. 

All in all, NUGS congress was not successful this year and I shed tears that after giving all my all in service of the union, together with my other colleagues, this is our bizarre story which shall go in history and be told generations. How saddened I feel but I hope our Maker will as usual, provide us comfort. As a fallible being as I am, I pray u forgive me if I ever wronged u in line of duty and in private life. But I do not regret serving the Union and am confident that I shall be judged on the positive side posterity. AMEEEEEN

Exactly fifteen years ago, having come to terms with the woefully inadequate budgetary support to the educational sector, the Ghana Education Trust Fund was set up under Act 581, (of the Parliament of Ghana). It was quite rightfully named “The Heartbeat of the Students”. This fund was supposed to be a supplementary support to the educational sector. 

In his book, GETFund, A NUGS Presidents’ Account, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah states that “The idea of an Educational Trust Fund was conceived, fertilized, implanted, nourished and hatched by students of Ghana during the turbulent era of the men on horseback, in the 1980’s because, paraphrasing a world bank report in 1985, subsequent governments after Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah progressively dwindled their budgetary allocation to the education sector.”

With stiff opposition from the military and later civilian government of the time to the idea, it never materialized until the late 1990’s seemingly fuelled by the “MMOBROWA STRUGGLE demonstration in 1999 and this ideas was again brought forth by the student leaders into the public’s discourse. This with the support of some friendly to the students struggle within government such as Mr. Kwame Peprah, Mr. Totobi Quarkyi and Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, the GETFund was established in Sptember, 2000 with the promulgation of Act 581.  

Per the Getfund Act: 

1. The fund was to be funded through the imposition of an additional tax on all goods and services which attract V.A.T, allocation as may be prescribed by the Parliament and other donations. 

2. The fund was to be entrusted in the hands of Board of Trustees…

It was the expectation of many a Ghanaian student as expressed in the NUGS that finally, “our educational hiccups had gotten the customary white thread to be laid on its scalp.” But contrary to this expectation, the trend of expenditure to follow was nothing either than reckless which has led to the emergence of an even more gloomy picture of our educational prospects as a country; even more pronounced than the early years of the fund. 

The fund which was formed with the primary preoccupation of funding tertiary education (which is the sector capable of training young people with the skills to become productive citizens), has seen it's scope capriciously expanded to almost become the source of funding for Gahanna’s entire educational sector. Arbitrary spending has characterized the administration of the fund and this has seriously militated against the fund and its ability to seriously and meaningfully help support the growth of Ghana’s educational landscape. 

The major pre-occupation of NUGS is advocacy in the educational sector. It therefore baffles every discerning Ghanaian student that the NUGS of recent years, has been conspicuously silent on the many months, running into years of areas which has not been paid to the fund by government. It is worthy of note that the cost of education is rising exponentially, however, governments commitment keeps dwindling. We recall that in 2009 the government withdrew a major part of its subsidy to tertiary education with the excuse of lack of funds. One wonders why a government that has increased taxes time without number at exponential rates, will show such negligence to a sector as important as education. 

As if this is not enough, government for the past two years, has been trying very hard to introduce the payment of utilities to students. The ideas of cost sharing which was mooted by the Busia government, which has gone through many faces, is now rapidly becoming cost shifting unto the Ghanaian student. This is typified in the policies and approaches to funding education by the government of John Dramani Mahama. 

In light of this, I as a concerned Ghanaian Student, seeing myself as a microcosm of the situation and expressing the mind of many millions of Ghanaian students call on all Ghanaians to rise up and give the government the needed pressure to do the right by transferring the accumulated monies to the Getfund. I also call for a review of the effectiveness of Getfund and further streamlining it to make it more effective. 

For a strong GETfund will fuel Ghanaian students on government scholarship especially those abroad whose plight has become a quagmire in resent times, ensure the release of the thesis and bursary grants on time, support educational infrastructure,  and to a large extent even benefit private tertiary institutions in Ghana.

It is very imperative that the NUGS leads this charge. The NUGS must rise from the ill motivated comma that it has slumbered into and act. 

The millions of Ghanaian students who suffer the brunt of such negligence are waiting on them.

End ‘ritual’ strikes in education sector now – USAG tells gov’t

The University Student Association of Ghana (USAG) is asking government to solve once and for all, challenges with the book and research allowances for university teachers.

UTAG suspends strike

They expressed great displeasure at the manner with which government  deals with issues concerning education.

The University Teacher Association of Ghana (UTAG) last week after assurance by government to pay their book and research allowance suspended its strike.

UTAG has threatened to go back on strike should the release of the allowance delay.

In a press release signed by USAG’s President, Henry Nkosuo Boakye, the association advised government to review its provisions made towards education.

“Our teachers heard our humble cry and for that reason are back to the classroom. On that note we want to say Ayekoo to our gallant University Teachers for listening to the cry of University Students and coming to lecture us. Meanwhile we bemoan the government for the sluggish way in solving the issues with our lecturers once and for all so that this annual ritual of strikes will be a thing of the past,” he added.

“We want to unequivocally state that we are unhappy whenever the government is not quick to solving issues that will give Ghanaian students quality education as promised and advice that an urgent review be done towards the provision of quality education which seem to have become only a mantra without action.”
